surveyA survey sets out to: describe, compare, explain, or predict a condition, behavior, or outcome. It provides trainers and managers information they need to make decisions about programs, projects, people, and initiatives. How much you should invest in a survey to accomplish these purposes depends on the value of the information derived from that survey.

Regardless of the type of survey instrument you plan to employ, there are certain characteristics surveys must meet. They are:

  • measurable survey objectives
  • sound research design
  • effective survey question design
  • sound sampling strategy, when needed
  • effective survey response strategy
  • meaningful data summary
  • effective data display and reporting.

improving-professional-developmentWhen was the last time you were in a room with a truly exceptional facilitator—where the group was engaged, progress was being made, and issues were raised and then resolved? For me, a great facilitator makes it look like magic; however, we all know it's not that easy.

We recently convened a group of experienced and exceptional facilitators to help us paint the picture of excellent facilitation in action. These facilitators were subject matter experts (SMEs) with at least 20 years of experience. Our intent was to leverage their insights and experiences to capture the critical skills that effective facilitators use.

VETTo prepare for the future workplace, the vocational education function must prepare to make five foundational shifts.

During the past decade, vocational education has changed dramatically. Not only have the function's objectives become more aspirational, but the way it influences the business also has increased in scope and complexity. There are a variety of reasons for these changes, but two things are clear: training and development no longer is synonymous with training courses, and the function needs to thoroughly evaluate how it can be an effective driver of the organization's necessary evolution in the new work environment.
